The Acheulean Civilization in Morocco

 

◙ The Lower Paleolithic (Acheulean) is a civilization whose traces have been known in Morocco for at least 700,000 years. The major discoveries concerning this period are made in Casablanca (Carrière Thomas, Oulad Hamida, Sidi Abderrahman…).

◙ A Moroccan-French scientific team has discovered an unprecedented technique dating back a million years, in the ancient phases of Acheulean civilization in Africa, at the "Thomas I" archaeological site in Casablanca.
 
◙ This is the discovery of small flint stones no longer than 6 centimeters in length, worked in a special technique known as "Bipolar Anvil Percussion" which aims to make very small elongated tools,indicates Monday June 08, 2020 a press release from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports - Department of Culture of Morocco.
 
◙ These flint tools were discovered at the Acheulean archaeological level (level L1) on the site of "Thomas I" in Casablanca which dates at least a million years ago, noting that two-sided stone axes and other large tools made of quartzite stone, such as three-faceted axes, spherical and hemispherical shaped cores, various polyhedron cores, concentric and circular carving cores and several hammers have also been discovered at the archaeological site.
